SMPS has launched one of the most important initiatives in its 40-year history: A comprehensive survey to examine and define the professions of marketing and business development in the design and building industry—and we need your help.

Please participate in the Role Delineation Survey and invite your colleagues, principals, and project managers to do the same. SMPS needs to capture the scope of marketing and business development responsibilities firm-wide. Membership in the Society is NOT required to take the survey.

Available through May 30, the survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. If you cannot finish it in one session, you can come back to it later and pick up where you left off. However, please submit your completed survey by May 30. Note: At the end of the survey, you will find a box for additional comments where we encourage you to include any knowledge areas or tasks not covered in the survey.

Survey takers will be asked to create an account before beginning, and those completing the survey, will be entered into a drawing to win one of six great prizes from SMPS.

For more information about the survey, visit http://www.smps.org/Recent-Updates/Participate-in-SMPS-s-Role-Delineation-Survey-Through-May-30/.

Jerry Blow is owner of Jerry Blow Architectural Photography in Raleigh, North Carolina, and has 30 years of experience in the A/E/C industry as an architectural photographer.

Prior to joining the A/E/C industry, Jerry worked for the Defense Department in Washington, DC, managing the design/development/deployment of submarine-launched nuclear warheads. He studied photography at the Smithsonian and Harvard, and left the warheads behind to focus on architectural photography.

As an SMPS Triangle member, Jerry has contributed to Chapter knowledge of professional photography and led a 2009 SMPS National webinar “The Insider’s Guide to Working with an Architectural Photographer” with Travis Hicks, AIA, Senior Design Architect at O’Brien/Atkins. For more information about this webinar, please visit SMPS.org.

Jerry is a member of the national Association of Independent Architectural Photographers, the only photography group in the country that qualifies its membership through invitation-only membership process involving review and acceptance of a photo portfolio, industry references and testimonials.

He is originally from Portsmouth, Virginia, near the Virginia Beach area. In his free time, Jerry enjoys contributing to programs and activities as a board member of the downtown Raleigh “Historic Oakwood” neighborhood. When possible, he goes surf fishing with friends and plays golf with his three brothers. In his work time, he enjoys doing aerial photos from a two-seater helicopter.

A hidden talent of Jerry’s is his singing ability. As a teenager, he sang with his brothers in a gospel quartet in churches across Virginia, including several performances on the Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker Show.

The economy and construction have been on quite a ride for the past few years. While we are still looking at some potential ups, downs and tight turns ahead, the track over the last several quarters has been relatively flat. Will we continue at a crawl or will the next turn take us into a much faster-paced recovery?

Leading industry economists from Reed Construction Data, the AIA and the AGC join forces for the upcoming webcast:

Riding the Roller Coaster: Ups and Downs for Construction Spending, Materials and Labor

Join us on May 9, when chief economists, Bernard Markstein, Ken Simonson and Kermit Baker share their insight into 2013 construction activity:

 ■ What issues are directly affecting the construction outlook?
■ Which markets are showing the most growth?
■ Will housing numbers continue to climb?
■ What’s ahead for the home improvement industry?
■ Which building material prices will spike? Which will fall?
■ Which areas of commercial construction will perform best?
■ What are architects seeing for commercial construction?
■ Have unemployment numbers really fallen?
■ Will labor shortages derail the industry’s rebound?
■ Which areas are experiencing the most change?
■ What are the top risks to the 2013 economy?

The live webcast airs on May 9, 2013, from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m., EDT, with the speakers accepting questions from the online audience in the last half hour. An archived version will be available after the broadcast.

Brought to you by InfoTech International, this complimentary webcast is open to everyone. Sign up today to view the live broadcast, watch the archive or download presentation slides.

March 2013

Brasfield & Gorrie’s work on the Rex Healthcare of Holly Springs project in Holly Springs, North Carolina, has earned the company an Eagle award in the Healthcare – Less than $10 Million category of ABC’s National Excellence in Construction Awards. Brasfield & Gorrie representatives received the award Feb. 20 during the 23rd annual Excellence in Construction Awards celebration at the Harbor Beach Marriott Resort in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

“ABC is proud to recognize Brasfield & Gorrie for its outstanding work on the Rex Healthcare of Holly Springs project,” said Michael D. Bellaman, ABC president and CEO. “This project embodies a commitment to innovation, safety and superior craftsmanship through creativity and skill.”

The Excellence in Construction Awards program is the industry’s leading competition, developed to honor innovative and high-quality merit shop construction projects. The award honors all construction team members, including the contractor, owner, architect and engineer. The winning projects, selected from entries submitted from across the nation, were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges overcome, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost.

Despite a one-month schedule delay caused by a direct tornado hit, Brasfield & Gorrie completed this two-story, 34,238 sq ft health care facility on time thanks to careful planning.

“Brasfield & Gorrie is excited to have partnered with Duke Realty on this successful, national award-winning project. This medical office building will serve the healthcare needs of the Holly Springs community for many years to come, and we are excited to have been part of the project,” said Scott Duckworth, Regional Vice President at Brasfield & Gorrie.

A panel of industry experts served as the competition’s judges. This year’s panel included representatives from the Design-Build Institute of America, Engineering News-Record, the American Institute of Architects, and the National Association of Women in Construction, as well as representatives from higher education, among others.

About Brasfield & Gorrie
Brasfield& Gorrie is one of the nation’s largest privately held construction firms, providing general contracting, design-build, and construction management services for a wide variety of markets, including healthcare, commercial, institutional, federal, municipal, industrial, infrastructure, and water/wastewater treatment. We serve clients from offices in Atlanta and Columbus, Georgia; Birmingham, Alabama; Dallas, Texas; Jacksonville and Orlando, Florida; Nashville, Tennessee; and Raleigh, North Carolina. Brasfield& Gorrie has approximately 2,900 employees, and its 2012 revenues were $2 billion. Engineering News-Record ranks Brasfield& Gorrie 32nd among the nation’s “Top 400 Contractors” for 2012.

Pat Perkins has been in the A/E/C industry for over 30 years. Holding a Masters in Library Science, Pat managed a public library reference department in Cleveland, Ohio, prior to joining the industry. Pat has been actively involved in SMPS for several years. She has served as both Director at Large and Secretary for numerous terms and has also served on the Programming Committee and Public Relations Committee. Pat says, “I truly enjoy being involved with SMPS-meeting those new to the industry, nuturing relationships-new and established-learning how others do things, all amount to invaluable experience.”

In her free time, Pat loves to read. She and her husband, Bill, also love traveling. They have been to Europe, Alaska, and most recently, they took a Panama Canal/Central America cruise over the holidays. Italy and the Greek Isles were two favorites for them in past travels. She also enjoys college basketball, “Go Duke!”, and pro football, “Go Browns!”

Fun Fact – Pat studied French from Kindergarten through 4 years of college (French major). “Unfortunately, most of what I learned no longer occupies my hard drive ”, says Pat.
